Congolese ‘fixer’ Moto Mabanga is involved in a variety of oil and telecommunications deals – and lawsuits – across the African continent. Lately, he has been attempting to block Royal Dutch Shell’s takeover of British Gas, a US$70 billion deal, in Tanzanian courts. Mabanga owns small stakes in gas blocks co-owned and operated by British Gas in Tanzania. While his suit might seem outlandish, he’s had great success in African courts in the past to the detriment of major companies like Vodacom and Ophir Energy. Two years ago Mabanga achieved a US$ 21 million settlement against Vodacom regarding a ‘success fee’ that he claimed was owed but never paid.
