Bilal Erdogan, the president’s son, fled to Italy with his family in September 2015 to ‘finish his PhD studies’. Shortly after arriving, Erdogan’s detractors filed a complaint alleging that €1 billion from a corruption scandal was missing. Italy’s prosecutors then announced Bilal was under investigation in Italy for money laundering. In March 2016, the Saudi embassy helped Bilal to escape police custody and fly back to Turkey; using a forged Saudi passport and disguised as an Arab diplomat.
