6. Country’s Largest Newspaper Shutdown

The Turkish government seized control of the country’s largest newspaper, Zaman, on March 4, 2016. Water cannons and tear gas were used against the Zaman newspaper supporters gathered in front of its headquarters protesting the seizure. Previously an opposition newspaper, it now airs and graces the Erdogan family each day.
